JUNK  BOX  WAR  INSTRUCTIONS

W.G. Kiwanis 2024 STEM FAIR

Assemble in Cafeteria for briefing at 9:15 and combined start at 9:30

           Saturday January 27th 2024 – 9:30 at the Middle School Cafeteria

The JUNK BOX WAR is open to students in grade 9-12

Two or three students only make up a team, (not less than two and no more than three students)

The competition will begin at 09:30 sharp.  If you are late, you will lose valuable time,  your Team Leader must register your team on-line by January 13th, 2024.

Each Team will be given a Table Number where you will find a box of "junk".

All of the teams will have identical "junk" in their boxes

You will have two hours to build a mechanism to carry out a specific function.

After two hours all construction must end and the team competition phase will begin.

Each member of the First, Second, and Third Place Winning Team will be awarded a metal, a certificate and monetary award

An award will also be given out to the most unique designed mechanism.

Individual Projects

               RULES,  REGULATIONS  AND  PROCEDURES

                      

INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS: Students must register their entry forms with a  

                      description of their project by January 13th, 2024               

                           

                     All projects must be signed by their Science Teacher, parent or  

                          guardian (if home schooled).                                                                                                      

                      Only one student per entry please. Group projects will be

                       considered for judging post discussion with science teacher.

                       Student Project Exhibits must be setup before 8:30 am, Saturday January 27th, 2024

                       and ready for  judging. Students must be present during judging

The Kiwanis Club of West Geauga will follow the

Ohio Academy of Science 2022-2023

OAS is using ProjectBoard this year for all projects and suggest students use it throughout their entire planning process.  They recommend that local fairs use it as well so students can easily register and participate in the district and state fair.  Please contact your teacher for class id.

Science Day Standards 2022-2023

PROJECT DISPLAY: 

Table-top display dimensions shall not exceed 36 inches (91 cm) wide by 30 inches (76 cm) deep. The top of the display shall not be more than 85 inches (216 cm) above floor level or 55 inches (140 cm) above a 30inch high table. Extensions of a project beyond the state limits will result in dismantling or severe modification of the display, and may disqualify the student’s participation.

                       The exhibit must be sturdy enough to stand on its own. Assume drafts and possible bumps during display.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: Do not display anything that could injure a small

                        child or could harm anyone who might touch it.

                        Do not display food of any type – use pictures.

DISQUALIFICATION: The violation of any rule may mean disqualification.

 

JUDGING: Two judges will review and evaluate your Research Project. The

                         judges are professionals and teachers in the field of Science,

                         Engineering, and Technology.

   How Do I Fare?

 

 

6th, 7th and 8th grade students only, who are not doing an individual project.  Two students team up (do not need to be in the same grade) and use both their heads to solve the challenge puzzles

You must be present at the 09:00 am briefing.  The Competition will begin at 09:15 sharp. If you are late you will score 0 for those puzzles missed.  Both students must register on-line by Saturday Jan 13th, 2023.

There will be 12 puzzles arranged in 3 rooms.  You will have 4 minutes to read the problem description and work to solve it. The correct answer scores 2 points. A bonus question will earn you an additional point.  A signal will sound at 5 minutes and you move to the next puzzle station.

This is not a test. It will be a fun, surprising and entertaining show of science where you use problème solving skills, ingenuity, logic, life experience and two heads to solve puzzles (which is what science is all about).
